More information on what could have been for Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie has been revealed. The canceled project was supposed to cover “the last 80 years” of Batman mythos and give a “new kind of perspective” on the Dark Knight, according to an artist formerly affiliated with DC.
In an interview with Inverse, former DC storyboard artist Jay Oliva, who worked on films such as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Wonder Woman, revealed that they were involved in Affleck’s Batman movie and gave details on what the film would have been about–albeit without actually spilling too many beans. When Oliva was brought on board, there were “a couple of drafts,” and the only thing they could see was what Affleck and writer Geoff Johns showed them. They said it was “f—ing awesome.”
“I’ve worked on a lot of Batman things and what was really cool about it was, it was tying together a lot of really cool Batman storylines that had never been really explored,” Oliva said. “Ben’s story was gonna cover something that had never really been covered in comics but was building off of storylines in the Batman mythos over the last 80 years and approaching it from a new kind of perspective.”
Not much is known about the film, and in 2019 Affleck stated that he would no longer be playing Batman. Affleck had previously planned to direct a solo Batman film, but eventually pulled back. Olivia shared more thoughts, saying:
“It was very clever, and there were a lot of things about it that I really loved that I wish that had come to fruition,” Oliva said. “It was a really great project in the beginning. Ben had to step away for personal reasons, and I totally understood, but the time that I spent with Ben working on the project was fantastic.”
