All Gwent Card Locations (Card Collector Achievement)

Gwent is one of the most remarkable aspects of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. When a game is so well-made that even its mini-games inspire devotion, it’s safe to say the developer did something right. Building Geralt’s Gwent deck can be one of the most satisfying aspects of The Witcher 3, spanning the entire length of the base game and its expansions.

Aside from the sheer joy of completing Geralt’s deck, the main reason to go after every card is to unlock the “Card Collector” trophy/achievement, which requires Geralt to find every card in the base game. Players looking to complete this task must be ready from the outset, as several easily missed cards are available almost immediately after waking from the dream of Kaer Morhen.

Its long list of achievements ensures that completionists never run out of things to do. To help players with the “Card Collector” trophy/achievement, this guide has been updated with general improvements to ensure players can more easily find all Witcher 3 Gwent card locations. Card lists have been reformatted to include images and descriptions, and to make the guide easier to navigate.

Notes on Gwent Card Collecting

Geralt begins the game with the base Northern Realms deck, which he will use for a large part of the early game. It includes several special weather cards and 24 unit cards.

There are 199 total Gwent cards to be collected in The Witcher 3. Of those, 120 are unique, with the remainder being duplicates. For example, the Blue Stripes Commando card uses the ‘Tight Bond’ skill to work in conjunction with its copies, so there are three Blue Stripes Commando cards. Geralt need only collect unique cards to complete “Collect ‘Em All.”

There are several ways for Geral to acquire Gwent cards in The Witcher 3. The two most common methods will be winning them in Gwent matches, and purchasing them from various merchants. Each region has quest lines associated with Gwent, such as the “Big City Players” quest in Novigrad. Geralt should do his best to complete these before moving on in the story. Several of the cards available in these quests can be lost if certain story events play out.

On rare occasions, Gwent cards will be found in non-Gwent related quests, which will be detailed later in the guide.

A Note on Difficulty

If Geralt is struggling to win matches, it is important to remember that Gwent has its own separate difficulty levels. In settings, look for the difficulty slider dedicated to Gwent. This will not affect any achievement requirements, or the difficulty of the rest of the game.

Players can get an idea of what cards remain by utilizing “A Miraculous Guide to Gwent.” See the section at the end of the guide for more details.

How to Get A Miraculous Guide to Gwent

One of the most important tools Geralt can find in his search for Gwent cards is A Miraculous Guide To Gwent. This book uses magic to keep track of how many cards remain in each region. While it is not the most robust or reliable source of information, it does help with the most basic, general information.

The book can be acquired by defeating the scholar at the Inn in White Orchard. When Geralt first arrives at this location, Vesemir will task him with questioning the Inn’s patrons. Look for several men playing Gwent and approach. After Geralt asks his questions, he will begin to leave. The Scholar will then offer Geralt his first Gwent match. Beat him to receive the first card and A MIraculous Guide to Gwent. Though it doesn’t spell out all Witcher 3 Gwent card locations, it is still worth having.

Quest Match Rewards Vs. ‘No Renown’ Match Rewards

When examining A Miraculous Guide to Gwent, players will notice that 47 cards can be won from ‘players of no particular renown or skill.’ Unlike quest matches, which will always award Geralt with pre-determined cards, matches with players of ‘no particular renown or skill’ will reward Geralt with a card randomly selected from a pool created for this purpose.

Once Geralt has collected all Witcher 3 Gwent Cards, he can set his sights on all cards from the DLC, including the new Skellige deck.

Gwent Cards in White Orchard

White Orchard will be the first location Geralt can play and obtain Gwent cards. There is one match and two NPCs that sell cards. If Geralt buys cards from one, the other will no longer sell them.

Location 1: Scholar at the White Orchard Inn

It is reported that some players receive Eredin, Bringer of Death for completing “Gwent: Velen Players.” In this playthrough, Destroyer of Worlds was that quest’s reward, and Bringer of Death was awarded at the Passiflora. It is believed that these rewards are sometimes switched.

Playing Innkeeps: Velen Match, Inn at the Crossroads

“Gwent: Playing Innkeeps” is spread out around Velen, Novigrad, and Oxenfurt. Only one match takes place in Velen.

Zoltan can sometimes be difficult to enter a match with. If he cannot be found at the Rosemary & Thyme, continue with missions, checking back after each. Players may need to wait until after Dandelion is rescued.

Defeat Thaler at Seven Cats Inn

If Geralt plays through “Old Pals” before “A Deadly Plot,” he can win his signature card later, after “A Deadly Plot” has been completed.

Thaler can die during the “Reason of State” quest, so make sure to face Thaler as soon as “A Deadly Plot” is over. There is also a known bug that causes Thaler to not have the interaction symbol above his head. If this happens, get Geralt as close to him as possible and repeatedly press the appropriate interact button.

Gwent Cards Won From Players of No Renown

Once Geralt has collected every card that can be purchased and acquired through quests, the remaining cards will be won through matches with various NPCs. Every region has a limit on how many cards can be won, so if Geralt stops receiving cards for playing, it’s time to move to a different region. Use A MIraculous Guide To Gwent to get an idea of where Geralt stands. Look for armorers, blacksmiths, innkeeps, and all merchants as possible partners for matches.

Rewards are chosen from a pool of possible Gwent cards. There is no way to ensure any one card is won. Since this is the case, the remaining cards will be divided by deck.

Gwent Card Special Abilities Explained

The Decoy, Geralt, weather, and Scorch Gwent cards from The Witcher 3

All Witcher 3 Gwent Cards have various abilities that make them right for certain situations. However, some cards have special abilities that, when used properly, allow Geralt to gain the upper hand on his opponents.

Ability Name	Symbol On Card	Effect
Hero		Heroes have a golden sun around their strength number. Heroes are impervious to any special card or weather effects, but they are also unable to benefit from any strength boosting effects, like the Commander’s Horn.
Tight Bond		Two hands interlocked represent Tight Bond. Tight Bond works in conjunction with other cards of the same name, increasing the strength value of each. Two cards would double the original value, three cards would triple, etc.
Muster		Muster is represented by two helmets. When the player plays a muster card, any card with the same name is pulled from the deck and hand and placed on the battlefield.
Agile		Agile is represented by two arrows circling in a clockwise direction. This ability allows the player to choose between placing the card as a ranged unit or close combat unit.
Spy		Spy is represented by a large eye. Spy cards are placed on the opposing player’s field, adding their strength total. In return, the player draws two cards from their deck.
Morale Boost		Morale Boost is represented by a cross. This ability allows a card to boost the strength of all other basic combat cards in the same row by 1. This effect can be multiplied by using multiple Morale Boost cards. It also works in conjunction with other boosts, like Commander’s Horn or Tight Bond.
Medic		Medic is represented by a black heart with a white cross. This ability, when placed on the battlefield, allows the player to draw a single card from the discard pile.
Scorch		Represented by a skull with horns. This ability is found on the Villentretenmerth card, which allows it to take out the most powerful card(s) on the enemies Close Combat row, as long as the total of all cards in the row is 10 or more.
Commander’s Horn		Represented by a horn. Found on the Dandelion card, this ability acts the same as the regular Commander’s Horn, doubling the strength of all basic combat cards in the same row.
